The announcement of NASA’s Space Reactor-1 Freedom project in March 2026 marks the return of space nuclear power to the forefront. The United States is thus demonstrating a clear ambition: to use nuclear energy to support its future lunar and Martian architectures.
This announcement raises several questions. Why is nuclear power returning to the space debate today? What needs is it intended to address? Which technologies are genuinely mature, and which remain prospective? What programmes are being developed by the United States, China, or Europe? Finally, what opportunities and sovereignty challenges does this represent for European stakeholders?
This report provides an overview of space nuclear power in 2026. It presents the main technologies under development, their applications, their level of maturity, the strategies pursued by the various actors, and the constraints associated with their implementation. It also examines the areas in which Europe could build credible autonomy and leverage its existing capabilities.
